PROVIDING SERVICES IN THE PATIENT'S HOME
Seeing our patients in their homes provides us with critical information about the person and their situation. This information allows us to make recommendations that are specific to the person and how they live. The unique patient care we provide results in greater creativity on the part of the psychologist, in developing strategies and techniques for the patient and family. It also allows for maximum utilization of training time during cognitive rehabilitation. Another benefit to this care model is it allows us to see how the individual functions in their own environment, where they are most comfortable. There is no stress of travel, parking and being in an unfamiliar environment, which can create significant anxiety and distress for patients with dementia.
What is decision making capacity and why does it matter?
“…an assessment of the individual's psychological abilities to form rational decisions, specifically the individual's ability to understand, appreciate, and manipulate information and form rational decisions.” (R.J.Leo, 1999). Decision Making Capacity influences every decision a person makes from how they spend their money to where, how and with whom they live. It can also impact decisions about medical treatment, driving or making a new will and a myriad of other daily decisions that impact today's older Americans and their families.
